The centerpiece work, McDowall’s cantata, describes the sixteenth-month journey from Syria to Germany of Nujeen Mustafa, a Kurdish teenager with cerebral palsy. She was seeking asylum when she traveled from Aleppo through eight countries, her sister Nasrine pushing her wheelchair.
